The good news is I've been painting like crazy! The bad news is I lost my camera in a robery a couple months ago and have yet to replace it. :( Needless to say I haven't had much to blog about hobby-wise without the camera, since I'm more of a: "check out pics of my mini's" kind a guy then a...."words words words" about my mini's kind of guy. Along with painting, going to school, spending time with family, & working, I try to squeeze some music making in when I can. Please enjoy my latest creation. I think this could be a suitable sound track to my newly painted Necrons storming the battlefield.

I finally managed to complete my widowmakers. I love these guys (and gal). The models are full of character, as with most of the line.

The army as a whole is going to have red armor with green for the fabric, though I gave the leader a red dress and hat so she would stand out.

Screaming bell / Plague furnace: Magnetic assembly

I wanted to get bang for buck out of this awesome kit and be able to field either of the two models. This can be done rather simply with a few well placed magnets. Here's a quick rundown of how I did it and where all the magnets go.....

Parts

Here is the completed set of sub assembly's with magnets. More detail below.....

Back crew

One in the rear of the plague monks and one on the "other" side of the plank.

Cog assembly

shave off the plastic sprue nub, replace with magnets.

The hole in the chain had to be slightly drilled to fit my magnets.

Front crew

One in the middle of the front plank, bottom of the plague priest, and warpstone censer basket.

Everything that doesn't have a magnet just slides into place.

The only slightly tricky part was gluing this arm on. I assembled with the cog pieces, then glued the arm on. disassembled once good and dry.

I glued a piece of sprue here to prevent the back plank from popping up.

I have always loved Bretonnia, and in fact used to have a sizable army that I never got a chance to assemble and ended up trading for another army. Well.....I have been watching Game of Thrones and I'm on the 4th book. It's incredible and has really inspired me to paint some knights. So I'm doing a Bretonnia army inspired by the house of a song of fire and ice series. I have completed my first knight

The great thing about this is its a nice break from the other projects I'm working. Something to break up the lull of painting the same color over and over again.

Music is a big part of gaming and painting for me. It inspires me. The Band Solitude Aeturnus, IMO is very fitting for Blood Angels, and I have deemed them the sound track for my Blood Hammers. It's divine, and epic and fitting of the term "Descent of Angels". Have a listen and let me know what you think.

Blood Hammers: Colors

Below is a breakdown of the colors I use to paint my Blood Hammers. All paints used are GW except where noted. I usually prime with Krylon black primer (about $3.99 at a dept or hardware store. In the case of these guys, I primed with black primer and then sprayed them with a can of GW dark angels green I had laying around (not sure this is made anymore).

Blue armor: Base coat-Dark angels green followed by Scaly green, then hawk tourquoise with highlight of ice blue

Red Armor: Base coat-Dark angels green, followed by red gore, blood red, highlight of blazing orange.

Stone base: Base coat of macharius solar orange, wash with ogryn flesh followed by bubonic brown, highlight with skull white.

Purity seals & white armor/wings: Base coat denab stone, wash with grephonne sepia followed by bleached bone with highlight of skull white.

Gold: Base of Valejo brass, wash with devlan mud, followed by valejo gold, highlight with chainmail.

Metal: Base of boltgun metal, wash with badab black, followed by chainmail, highlight of mithryl silver.

Black, I simply highlight with adeptus battlegrey

Brown leather: Base coat with Calthan brown, wash with devlun mud, followed by snakebite leather, highlight with tausept ochre

Dirt: Charodin granite, followed by codex grey, highlight fortress grey.

For purity seal writing i use a 0.1 staedtler pigment liner pen (bought at michaels crafts)

I haven't been posting too much on the Blog-o-net of late. But that doesn't mean I haven't been busy. In fact I've been so busy with various projects I just haven't had the time to really stop and take fancy pictures, not to mention, the weather has not been cooperating for good pics lately. I've been expanding my games lately into other non GW games. Along with Warmahordes, I'm investing time and $$ into Dystopian wars & Malifaux. I'm also thinking of starting an Imperial Guard or Dark Eldar army.

So here's a few random updates along with a couple pics.

For Dystopian wars I have chosen, Empire of the blazing sun. My fleet is coming along nicely, and I hope to have it completed soon. I actually have taken a few pics along the way, so I hope to have a step by step post on the fleet soon.

Mostly done, just need to add some details/highlights.

For Malifaux I'm going to be playing Guild, and I also picked up some Neverborn for the kids to play. I'm going to be trying out a new priming method on these guys. So hopefully more on that later.

I've been playing Blood Hammers a lot, and the work has been slow, just been slightly distracted with the above new stuff. However, I did manage to complete a Furioso Librarian converted from Black reach dreadnaught body and spare furioso parts (I used the new kit to make a death co dread).

sawing the black reach face plate was a major pain, but worked out ok in the end (with a little green stuff)

I have lots to paint still, and hope to post something soon. In progress: Dante, Storm raven & Lemartes.

What about Space wolves? I love my wolves, I've been playing them, but just haven't been inspired to paint them lately. I have Lukas started, and want to do something interesting for his cloak. I would also like to finish my dread.

Beyond that there is my Chaos Tzeentch army which is in a state of base coat, Dwarfs (I'm hoping for a new army book for my beloved Dwarfs soon), Chaos Dwarfs (with new models coming out now), and would kind of like to make a disgustingly all pink Slannesh CSM army.

Warpstone: source lighting

Nurglitch is done, with an attempt at some source lighting. I'm not sure the pics show it off enough though, almost just looks washed out by the sun.

This is my second attempt at source light. It turned out ok. It was actually a lot of fun imagining the glow coming off of the warpstone mace.

As I write this, I'm realizing I forgot to suitably rust up the weapons......

The effect is much more noticeable when compared to the side with no warpstone glow.

Evolution of a home brew Chapter

So I've been kicking around making my own space marines chapter for quite some time. To design ones own space marine chapter including a cool name, color scheme, chapter icon, and background is For myself (and I believe others) the culmination of the creative aspect of this hobby. I think I have finally come up with something that works for me. So before the big reveal I'll run down how I got there.

So my first idea was.....

Space Knights!!!

Cool name, or too cheesy? Kind of like space wolves but Knights! For a while I've been thinking along the lines of a knightly order similar to black templars or something. So I had the split shoulder pad (like a bretonnian grail knights shield) with a dragon as the icon.

Here's a W.I.P. chapter master (this is as far as I got)

I thought of an entire background (home planet of Avalon) with icons for all the squads and, names for all of the company captains.

Then I got side tracked with other projects like space wolves and my own chapter got put on the back burner, until recently.

So with the coming of the Blood angels codex, once again I thought of my chapter, as possibly a counts as blood angels chapter. But something wasn't right with the Space Knights. The name, color scheme, icon, just wasn't all jiving for me. So back to the drawing board.

I'm still thinking Knightly, and I liked the split shoulder pad, but wanted to go more Knightly...like knights in shinning armor style, and came up with this...

Not bad. I liked the split color, so I thought how about a split color scheme, and came up with......Blood Knights!!

No not Knights of blood...this is something totally original (sarcasm)

So I have an icon (which looks vaguely similar to angels encarmine) a name (original?...not really) and a color scheme, that I kind of like, but not 100%. I want it darker and more gritty! like a space marine, not a candy coated plastic man.

I started experimenting with my split colors and how I paint red. and came up with this...

Instantly I'm in love with how the Red came out. This is completely different then how I normally paint red.

Old way: base of mechrite red, blood red over this, with highlight of firey orange.

New way: Base of Dark angels green, followed by successive colors of Scab red, red gore, blood red, blazing orange.

The yellow, I don't hate, but it's ok. Something is still not 100% sold for me, until yesterday when, I'm in the car listening to one of my favorite artists and this track come on.

And it hit me. This was my chapter. Name, check. Blood angels successors, check. on to colors and Icon.

I was in love with the Red I came up with, and still kind of digging the split thing but wanted to come up with something new and original, here is what I came up with...

I have to say that I'm liking this 100%. Just need a cool icon...

And I decided to switch the bloody (hammer) arm to the weapon arm.

I give you the Emperors' Bloody Hammers.

(the main color is hawk turquoise, though it came out pretty blue in the pics)

100th post - New army test mini

So this is my 100th post. Fancy. I was planning on posting pics of my completed Lucas the trickster, but well...I got side tracked. It happens often. When federal tax refund comes, I'm getting some brand spanking new mini's and starting a new army! I'm going to be working on a "counts as" Blood Angels force that I like to call.....

Blood Knights!

Below are test mini pics of what I believe to be my final color scheme.

I settled on a split scheme, because I think it gives it the knightly quality the army needs, with the metallic side like shinny knightly armor and the left side dipped in blood.

Here is my first attempt at a scheme.

I had the knight thing going on, but not the Blood thing!

And for giggles, here's some old blood angel figures I painted over 20 years ago (I've always been a fan). Maybe some of these will get the repaint treatment and appear in my new army.

This poor guy came out more pink then red.

BATREP: Space Wolves vs. Sun Crushers

Space Wolves vs. Sun Crushers (counts as Blood Angels)

This should be fun. I'm not very great at remembering the key details of battle after the fact. I did a quick video of deployment (which you can hear my daughter in)

Mission: Seize ground (3 objectives rolled)
Deployment: Spear head
Space Wolves goes first

Turn 1:
Space wolves Drop pod deploys in an attempt to take out (counts as) Mephiston with Arjac, but my drop pod deviated to far away. this put Logan, the multimelta long fangs and arjac, in prime range to pop the land raider (immobilized it), but also in a bad spot to get assaulted next turn by terminators and the death company inside the land raider.

My Rune priest with jump pack and skyclaws moved into the center of the battlefield to be taken out by Sun crusher jump troops.

(I was hoping to pull off an Arjack / Jaws of the world wolf strike on Mephiston, but it did not work out)

Sun Crushers dropped 2 death company dreads near my objectives.

Pic below is the top of Turn Two

Turn 2:

Long fang missile launchers softened up the mid field jump troops, they were then assaulted by Bloodclaws w/ wolf priest & Lucas in the land raider. Jump troops were destroyed, mephiston remained.

Lone wolf took out one of the Death company dreads but took 1 wound.

My Logan strike force was taken out by the termies and Death company.

Top of turn Three

Turn 3:

Details get sketchy here.....

Blood claws took out the death company with a little help from the long fangs, but were then taken out by the termies and another death company dreadnaught (via drop pod) Mephiston moved in closer to my objective, lone wolf coming after mephiston.

At this point Sun crushers hold 1 objective, Space wolves hold 2.

Turn 4:

Jump troops move closer to my mid field objective, along with mephiston and a death company dread, my transport is popped and some wolf gaurd come out. to hold the objective,

Turn 5, for all the marbles.

Wolf gaurd destroy the Death company Dred, Jump troops take out the wolf gaurd (not sure if that happed turn 4 or 5). My lone wolf eventually came in to contest the objective, but was killed by mephiston.

Sun Crushers win. 2 objectives to 1.

End of turn 5

All in all, it was a pretty fun even paced game. Mephiston was a pain in my butt, and Death company are no joke! The Arjac/Jaws of the world wolf trick just did not pay off, and Lucas was probably a waste of points.

What worked?
Lone wolf did his job, took out a dread, I only wish he could have done more (and I forgot to take his Fenrisinan wolf wargear. oops)
BloodClaws were excellent, their sheer numbers and the re-roll with the priest was just awesome.
Long Fangs w/ missile launchers put out lots of reliable damage. Next time I'll stick with my usual 3 units of long fangs!

Happy New year gamers!

there is a lot in store for 2011. Here's a break down of what I currently have planned / in the works:

1. I've been working diligently on my Khador Army

2. Soon I'll have most of Khador painted and I'll be switching gears to WFB and starting to paint up my Skaven army. Can't wait for the new mini's this month

3. I'm reading Prospero Burns right now which is really getting me in the mood for some Space Wolves. I also picked up a few classic Space wolves blister packs today at the FLGS. The sons of Russ should be getting some love soon!

4. At some point, I need to put the finishing touches on Tzeentch army.

5. Need to assemble and paint my Circle of Orboros army.

6. I just aquired a starter for a Skorne army.

7. And finally, I've been thinking of starting something new....Maybe Blood Angeles or Grey Knights....Well that should be plenty to keep me busy. For a while at least......

Skaven: Test mini

Normally I will end up doing quite a few test mini's before coming up with a scheme that I like. But this may be a first. I'm thinking this will work for my army.

With each army that I start, I like to put in some thought on how I'm going to get the army on the field and painted, and sometimes come up with new ways and techniques along the way to help get the mini's painted in a productive and decent looking way. With the skaven, since it's a horde army I thought ahead of time that I wanted to dip these guys. But I don't want to use the Stain method. I tried that with orks, and chaos and had decent results, but it had its drawbacks too. Stain is usually oil based which is just no fun. It takes forever to dry. And is pretty thick. So I thought it would be optimum to just dip in a GW wash, but that would be expensive! So what to do? Make my own wash. I've done this, and you can see the results. (I did paint the flesh last and used GW wash for this step). So more on how I painted them later. I have more Rat men to put together!!!

New Army: Skaven

I've always thought that one day I would like to do a skaven army. But so far I have resisted, with so many other projects under my belt. When the latest batch of awesome models came out, (doom wheel, plague furnace, etc), it was very hard to resist! With the Isle of blood release it was next to impossible......but I held my ground. I have plenty of projects right now. No need to start a new army.

So me and 2 old friends and war-gaming buddies of mine have an upcoming battle. The original plan was Them: a 2000 pt allied force of Lizard men & Empire against my 2000 pts of WOC. After giving this some thought, one of the allied generals decided it would be unfair for me to field 2000 pts (i.e. 500 pts of possible Chaos lord awesomeness), when they could only each possibly field a 250 pt lord or hero. I concede that there is a bit of logic there.

Which brings me to where I am now. I need a 1000 pt allied force to fight along side my WOC. And it hits me like a bolt of warp lightning.....SKAVEN!!!!

Needless to say, I quickly procured a set of IOB skaven, and I am now happily assembling them and going over what kind of color scheme I will use for my new army. I'm thinking fur like the rat in Ratatouille (space wolves color?). Stay tuned for some painted up Skaven.

WOC Tzeentch progress

Disclaimer - Nothing here is complete. All is still a work in progress, but I thought I would post where I'm at right now.

Since I began this project I've been painting the entire force pretty much all in one batch. My goal was to get the army to a point that I could play it and not be embarrassed by not having paint or a half painted force. For the most part, I think I completed that goal. I played a 2000 pt game this past weekend (more on that later).

This is one of my favorite miniatures. I have it forever and just never got around to painting. I even pulled it apart stripped the primer off and did a better job of getting rid of mold lines, then re-posed / re-glued the dude. I ran into a small problem though. The model has such an extreme lean, all the weight was on the left ankle and it cracked. I filled in with epoxy and use the staff to help brace the model to the base. Hopefully this will hold in without further cracking.

I love the wing span of this model. I think it looks way better then even the forge world greater daemon, which I think the wings look funny.

this is the closest model to completion. Only thing left is to paint the gems, complete the base, and I think I'll add some kind of design to the robe. And I need to do something to make the eyes stand out more.

I've decided that I do not like the standard that I put together for the marauders. It does not go with the rest of the army. I will be chopping this off and adding a more "flag" like standard.

I made the Tzeentch symbol on all the banners to look like the symbol of the the Daemons staff to tie them together.

So at this point, I have base coated, washed, and highlighted everything. Pretty much the only thing that remains is final highlights, completion of the bases, and some details to all the warlock purple banners/cloaks, I'm thinking some kind of flames on the bottom or something.

Tzeentch: Into the zone - Pt. 2

We are cooking with gas now! So my original goal was to get the armor and bases painted for the entire army, and have a somewhat fully "painted" army to play. Well, I've done this and then some!

The army as a whole has gone much quicker then I expected. I was originally thinking it may be a while before I got down to the details, but now I'm convinced that I'll be able to actually complete these guys before much longer. I just need to paint gold trim and weapon handles, and that will be it for all of the base colors. All that will remain is some highlights and well call it done! Oh wait......I need to complete the standards too.

I even brought them to work to paint on my lunch hour this evening. I'm on a mission!!!

After a small detour of figuring out my color scheme on the chaos warriors with the warlock purple cloaks, today I : Base coated everyone (remaining) Necron Abyss. Drybrushed Hawk torquise. Painted all the bases.
so far so good.

*edit* -- Meh, the picture didn't come out too well, I just wanted to throw this out there after feeling so accomplished! I'll get a better pic up soon to show progress more clearly.

Painting the Changer of ways

I'm about to get knee deep into painting my WFB Warriors of chaos Tzeentch army. The army will be a combination of old figures and new plastic kits. To start off, I've refitted some old metal chaos marauders with larger bases, and gave the standard bearer some extra bitz. I had mounted my Hell cannon on a ridiculously large scenic base, which seemed like a good idea at first, but not so good in play. I ripped it off to make it more table top friendly. I now have 1000 pts primed and ready for paint now.

test figures. one thing I tried with these guys was not painting all of the trim. going for a more random look. and it's quicker!

For this project I'm going to try something a little different. Rather then paint each unit in separate batches, I'm going to paint the Army all in one batch, but in stages. I'm going to start with my main color - Blue, and complete it along with shading and highlights. I'll then finish the bases. So at this point the army will be playable and painted (although just the main color). Then I will paint the rest in stages as time allows, i.e - Armor trim, fur, cloaks, etc.

I'm going to use a very bright palette for the army, fitting of the lord of change.

White cloaks / standards.

this is one of my favorite minis. It has everything I love about fantasy - Daemon, warmachine, dwarfs.

I'm constantly trying to come up with new ways to get my army painted, we'll see how this one goes.

I've been away form the blog for a bit while I moved into the new place. Now that we are here, I'm starting to get settled into the new place and have some hobby areas I didn't have at the apartment.

I used to have to paint on the kitchen table. This was a pain in the butt as I would either be taking up half the table (the wife loved this) or I would have to pack every thing up and get everything out every time I wanted to paint. In the new place we have a nice big bed room, with room for a workstaion, and I found a table at a thrift store for $15!

Whenever we wanted to get a game on in the apartment, it was the same story, take up the kitchen table, haul everything away when done. Well now I have a garage (i.e: man cave!) I also got a "newer" kitchen table from a gaming buddy. so that old painted on kitchen table is now the legs for the game table in the garage.

So lets just get to the best part of this case, $24.99 at Lowes. Right off the bat, that is 1/2 the price of any other "army transport" out there! I added extra foam in mine, for an additional $12. Still a BARGAIN!

Quality: 10 out of 10
Construction is very sturdy, Metal (aluminum) frame. It seems like it could take quite a bit if crush pressure, as all the corners and sides are reinforced. As you can see from the picture, the insides with the foam taken out are fully padded, so you can put minis directly onto the case surface.

The case comes with a perforated (simply pull out the chunks to your specifications) piece of 3 inch thick foam. I think this would be perfect for say Heavy warjacks, dreadnaughts, etc. For my Dwarf case, I'm using it for war machines, with plenty of room for expansion.

Room: 10 out of 10
After all, I want to be able to pack a bunch of dudes in here! What I really like, is in addition to the 3 inch foam, there is 2 inch of head room in the lid. What I have done is, discarded the top tool holder, bought 2 pieces of 1 inch foam from Jo-Anns fabric, cut out spaces for my dudes, and glued a piece of 2mm craft foam to the bottom for a tray that holds 55 small dudes each. You may not get as many chaos warriors, but for small infantry, that is 110 dudes in the top. I could theoretically add 3 trays to the bottom. for a total of 275 tiny men. How many does a GW case hold? 108 for like $60. Stelek at YTTH, stuffed one of these things with like 8 razorbacks, and a full army of space wolves.

Here's the foam I bought from Jo-Anns. Both were the correct size on one side, I just had to trim the short side of the 2mm and the long side of the 1 inch.

Special feature: 8 out of 10.

So what kind of special feature do you need in a case? There's no extra pockets for Books or cards. But you could probably fit some in here if need be as there is so much room. The Handle is nice and comfortable, It has solid Lockable Latches (One of the plastic latches on my GW case broke! ) and a shoulder strap. It also comes with movable padded dividers.

Overall: 10 out of 10

What more can I say. I fully endorse this case and plan on buying many more. I think it will do really nicely for Warmachine and Hordes!

I have to say, I miss the days when a Chaos force could be fielded of Warriors, Daemons, and Beastmen. And back in the days of Realm of Chaos - "Slaves to Darkness", fantasy warriors had access to technology!

With the separation of the new books it just seems like a lot of the chaos has been removed. I

Oh well, those days are gone, but it does not stop one from being creative with modeling. And WFB isn't as strict with the WYSIWYG. I had some old warriors that were missing lots of pieces and need a complete unit of 10 dudes. So I threw on a bunch of bits to make a truly "chaotic" war band.

Bitz used, (L-R, Space wolf bolter arm, tyranid arm, CSM body/head, Beastman standard arm, CSM standard, Marauder horsemen shield, Beastmen instrument arm, Marauder head, Khrone berzerker CC weapon arm, Chaos mutation arm.

I like the "newest" version of the chaos warrior plastic models. The sculpt is great. But they are ALL the same! More like the forces of order then Chaos to me.

I have the latest incarnations of the stone thrower, and some older bolt throwers but I need more!!! Today I stumbled upon ZVEZDA that makes some VERY affordable war machines that don't look half bad. They are not quite as detailed as a GW product, but I think a few dwarf bitz here and there would do the trick nicely. The stone thrower looks very similar to the last edition Dwarf one. The bolt Thrower just needs to be chopped down so the stunties can reach.

At $15.00 for 1 Bolt thrower, a stone thower, and 3 wheeled shields (use for entrenched?) How can you go wrong?

Here's the first unit of my Core Troops!

I shaved off all of the shield icons, to fit the icon of Karak Zuul.

Dwarf Warrior Musician carries the coolest looking instrument in the game!

I did give the Veteran a different color cloak to make him stand out a bit.

I trimmed all of the Anvil shaped hammers except for the veterans to make his unique.

Nothing fancy for the warriors as far as color scheme goes. They just get standard Leather trimmed armor. Light green shirts to match the rest of the army.

This is one of my favorite Dwarf Miniatures. I love the pose. He is looking very stoic.

I paid more attention to the gold then I normally do, trying to get it just right. I started with a base of shining gold, followed by chestnut ink shading, followed by devlin mud wash. I highlighted with burnished gold, followed by a tiny bit of chain-mail.

The Flesh, I took a bit more time then usual as well. Tallaran flesh base, shaded with fleshwash, followed by Gryphone sepia. Highlights with Dwarf flesh, followed by elf flesh.

Blond hair is Desert yellow base, gryphone sepia wash. Highlighted with bubonic brown followed by bleached bone.

Strike Force: Fire Fox!

I've always thought the idea of Deep striking terminators with relentless heavy weapons is a great idea, but space wolves can't teleport! They can however take a drop pod! I haven't had any drop pod models though, so the thought had just been sitting at the back of my mind until I read this. I have no desire to copy this army list, but I love the idea of Logan, Arjac & the long fangs in a drop pod. It makes me think of an elite strike force / black ops unit. so I came up with this:

When Logan Grimnar goes to war, he arrives at the tip of a drop pod assault spearhead deployed with an elite long fang unit known as the Fire Fox. The Fire Fox is always a full unit of long fangs armed to the teeth with Multi-Meltas, and led by none other then the wolf guard battle leader and Logans' greatest champion, Arjac Rockfist.

Fire Fox will Land ahead of the rest of the army taking out important targets before they know what hits them, with multimeltas blazing, and Arjac Laying down serious pain with his Foehammer.

If any enemy is foolish enough to assault the Fire Fox they will then feel the wrath of the Great King himself, Logan Grimar! They will not live to tell the tale of their mistake.

I need to win the lottery so I can have more time to finish the things on my plate. Here is what's in the current rotation:

Space Wolves - Need to complete a unit of long fangs w/ multi meltas, a couple more Thunder wolf cavalry and some Fenrisian wolves to round out my 2000 pt force for the next Contest of Champions.

Chaos Dwarfs - 15 Warriors, 10 blunderbuss, 1 sorcerer conversion, and a hobgoblin bolt thrower. This is going to be a quick 500 pt force to play/test/learn the new 8th Fantasy rules.

Tyranids - I've been wanting to get started on these guys for a while, but the Space Wolves have been taking most of my time. I think once the COC force above is complete, I may start painting a small force of nids to play/test/learn this codex. I have pretty much everything assembled, just need to lay down paint. I also want to put them on these wonderful bases (I'll need to remove them from their current ones).

Dwarfs!!!!! - They have been patiently waiting in the box unassembled for years!!! I have a ton of them, and nothing is assembled. Lots of work here, but once 8th comes out, I'm going to have to dive in!

So that is what's currently on the table. I would also love to make a Blood angels army, but I think that is more of a dream at this point (unless that lottery win happens). And depending on what comes in the Fantasy starter set.... (did I hear skaven?). I've always wanted to do a skaven army. I have a Skaven Blood bowl team, but that isn't even on the list of things to do at this point.

With the new look, I wanted to get away from bright colors and lots of red and do something totally different.

I like how the armor and weapons came out,

though I'm not super thrilled with the way the skin came out on the body. I might need to actually blend this to make it look more natural.

Disclaimer - I painted all of these in the early Nineties.

Well, I've un-boxed them and decided it's time for a Chaos Dwarf Makeover. I'll be giving them the Dawn paint strip treatment, and completely re-base and re-paint the entire army. I figured it would be kind of fun to put out some pics of these guys and reminise about my old paint style.

For some reason I thought I needed to use every color of the rainbow. To be fair the examples in the army book are pretty darn bright!

This one really cracks me up. One of my early conversion efforts, it's supposed to be the high priest Astragoth, before a miniature came out for him. Turns out my imagining was way off.

I had a great time yesterday playing in the Great Escape Games - Contest of Champions. All 3 of my opponents were very cool and fun to play with. All of them just great games! My Game scores were:

vs. Space Wolves - Capture and control, Draw
vs. Imperial Guard - Annihilation, My Wolves won.

There were some great looking armys on display yesterday.
I took home 2nd place for best over-all paint job!

If you are like me, chances are you have miniatures in every corner of your household. I have miniatures on my dining room table (currently being painted), these are sitting on top of a huge box full of an un-assembled dwarf army. My bedroom has miniatures covering every shelf and dresser top, filling "my side" of the closet and in a wall mounted display case. There are minis outside in a storage closet and down the street in my storage unit. In other words, I have miniatures coming out of my ears.

Dwarfs of Karak Zuul

I'll be using the design below for my shields and standards.

The once great stronghold of Karak Zuul was legendary amongst the Dwarfs for creating great war machines and fabulous runic weapons. In 2500 the hold was over run by Greenskins. Many Dwarfs died to ensure the engineers guild could escape with their plans and creations intact, including thier Lord Master Engineer; Burlan Barakison. . His sacrifice was not in vein for not a single war machine was captured by the Orcs. Now the Dwarfs that once called Karak Zuul home, roam the land as Rangers and Miners often attacking by surprise and from underground advances, always bringing their mighty war machines to bear upon the enemy. The Dwarfs of Karak Zuul will never rest till their grudge has been settled, and the Greenskins eradicated from the Worlds edge mountains and surrounding lands.

Battle report - Wolves vs. Nurgle

OK, not exactly a full on battle report...More of a synopsis. I had a great time last night playing Death of Angels and his Chaos Marines of Nurgle at the FLGS . We rolled Capture & Control, Dawn of War deployment. Playing 1750 pts.

I rolled First turn, but it was quickly stolen from me when he Stole the initiative! (the game was not off to a good start).

I quickly moved my Thunder wolves into position only to be surrounded by his forces.

The wolves took out his termies, but things got ugly for the thunder wolves when they were utterly destroyed by bolterfire. I think I rolled 5 ones in a row to fail armor saves. That and I ended up scattering my own Long Fang Missile fire onto them. Soon, the scene looked like this:

Hamish Blackwolf did not have much life left in him.

Once Hamish and the Thunder wolves were out of the picture, it was a cat n mouse game for the objectives and a couple very drawn out assaults.

If the game would have ended on turn 5 it would have most likely been a draw, but it continued, and I was able to make a mad dash for my opponents objective killing it's lone protector for the win.

All in all it was a very close game. I had a great time and look forward to meeting Death of Angels on the Battlefield for a rematch soon.

Wolf Lord: Hamish Blackwolf upon his Great grey Thunderwolf, Bifur. He is Harold Deathwolfs greatest Champion, and leads the great company to battle when Harold is indisposed or leading another part of the company elsewhere. He wields a huge frost blade given to him by Harold Deathwolf himself.

Frost blade made from plastic card, skull bitz from SW sprues. Sword arm was the great Frost Axe with axe removed. Left arm from Space marine Sargent kit.

His right pauldron is adorned with the Runes of his lord Harold Deathwolf.

Bifur poised Ready to strike!

The Base is a resin cast product form Secret Weapon. A great deal for only $5. My only complaint is it is slightly smaller then the Standard GW 60mm bases.

I'm thinking of getting rid of my Fantasy Green skin horde. These guys were Hilarious to play and fun to paint, but it's time to move on. Too many army's in boxes taking up room. But before it leaves the building, I thought I would document a few of the better paint jobs.

I like how the wood grain came out on this one. Fun unit to play.

I was perfecting my Bone technique on this guy.

Conversion I made from a tiny gobbo to a night gobbo champion. (cut off the feet and gave him a dress. which made twice the size of the original mini)

These are the only ones that I did not paint personally. Painted by friends and I ended up with them.

Dwarfs - There and back again

I have Dwarfs on the brain right now. Grumpy Stunty's work really inspired me to lay down some paint. So yesterday I worked out a test mini.

I kind of like how this one turned out, but I'm not sold on it being the color scheme for my entire army just yet. I also have an idea shooting around my head to do an army in my clan tartan.

I have this old regiments of renown set : The Dragon company , that have tabards that would be perfect for a nice plaid. Below if one of the miniatures from the set that I painted some 20 years ago.

I was really proud of this guy back in the day. But I'm thinking him and all of his buddies are going to get the strip treatment and a new look.

He was one of my first "conversions". I carved his little shield nub on his back into a little pack, and put a different type shield in front for mountain scene.

Another old mini form the Long Drong Slayer Pirates set.

I also loved the old Chaos Dwarfs. (Yes I can not wait to see what forge world does with them....Big hats or not)

This all leads to one inevitability. The Dwarfs are Coming!!!!!

Wolf Guard claims victory!

I took this newly completed unit to the FLGS last night for a good game. The game was annihilation, in which the wolves took the victory!!

It's a bit of a mix of models and conversions here. we have a couple from the Assault on Black reach set, 2 classic terminators with Cyclone missile launchers and 3 with combi weapons. 2 weapons from the space marine captain box (I think) and a homemade combi flamer.

This one didn't make the list. Maybe he'll appear in a future list

After much deliberation, I have completed converting my space wolves from the old colorful scheme to my new and improved more cohesive scheme.

My main objective was to be a little less rainbow, and a little more down to earth with the brown leather instead of the yellow leather. I used metal for the tubes instead of green. Now the only green is for my plasma guns which makes them stand out more. It was a little bit of work but overall, I am very pleased with the results.

All my space wolf tanks have been primed and awaiting my spray gun to come in the mail. I got it and put it to work right away. Set up, and use of the gun was very simple. It required very little adjustment to work properly. I had all my tanks sprayed in no time at all. Once dry I was able to put the details on. Below is the finished work.

I used Vellejo Blue grey model color paint in the spray gun.

Indecisive painting

I've come to the conclusion, that I'm an indecisive painter. Since normally I will create my own fluff and color scheme for an army, I'll paint a ton of test figures before deciding upon the final color scheme. And once I have come to something I like, chances are, down the road I may even change my mind again. I did this with Chaos space marines, Tyranids, and now with the current army on my painting table Space Wolves.

I didn't really test out a color scheme for the wolves I just picked a great company (Ragnar's) and went with it. I don't know if I was just being a bit over zealous or what, but the figures came out way to bright & colorful in the end (I can partly blame this on the incredibly detailed new space wolf models). So I need to fix this before I go any further.

I'm determined to complete my space wolves, but now that I have changed my color scheme half way through, this leaves me with the task of repainting everything I have so far. Luckily for me, the main part of the figure, the power armor will remain unchanged. I will be repainting all of the company markings, shoulder pad trim, leather parts, armor tubes, plasma weapons, and rune stones.

Am I just crazy, or does anyone else go through this?

Mounted Iron Priest + Cyber Wolves complete

He is done. I'm not completely thrilled with how he came out, but he will due. My dissatisfaction comes mostly because of the old sculpt of the miniature. I do not like how all of the armor has a pocked texture. For the conversion, I chopped off the thunder hammer arm for a reposition. and had to slightly pry the legs apart to fit him on the Juggernaught. For the Juggernaught, I shaved off all the spiky bits (in an effort to make him not look so chaos), gave him a green stuff saddle, and fur.

Here he is with is buddies. Chaos warhounds sans antlers. I posted them before, but the pictures were way blurry.

For the little runes and detail on his furry blue prints, I used Micro pen.

Long Fangs complete

Unit of Long Fangs complete. Though I normally field them as 2x(1 squad leader & 5 Missile launchers). Until I get some more missile dudes, the Las Cannons are "counts as" missile launchers.

They belong to Harald Deathwolf's Great Company. I created the symbol by applying the Logan Grimar transfer. I used Yellow ink to color the white moon in, as the translucent ink does not mess up the detail of the black wolf, then blocked off the sun with little mechrite red triangles. finally I touched up the sun with Golden yellow.

Long Fangs Pack marking. The Marine in MK6 armor is from the very first plastic space marine box set I bought years ago. He has been patiently waiting for his time to shine!

Tyranid Harpy Conversion

Here are some picks of my Harpy Conversion, which was very simple to achieve. Using the Carnifex kit, I just chopped off the front carapace pipes and replaced with some GW Dragon Wings. The base of the dragon wings needed to be cleaned up a little to fit, with the addition of green stuff around the joint.

If you are wondering what's going on with my Base, I'll be painting this to look like an "Alien" Landscape. I glued some googly eyes from Michaels craft store with a little green stuff around the base. Once painted, you wont be able to tell it was a googly eye. :) I also glued some long grain rice around, which I will paint to look like larva.

Magnetized Hunter killer missiles & Las TL Plasma conversion

I made some quick easy brackets to magnetize my Hunter killer missiles. This makes them easy to keep track of once used. Just pull them off. I scratch made the bracket because the supplied bracket doesn't have a whole lot of room for a magnet, and I usually use them for the other options.

Bracket is made of 1/8" thick plastic card (same thickness as the magnets)
I mark off a square a little larger then the magnet for the base and a rectangle for the stand that the HKM will be glued too.

Drill a hole in the base, the same size as the magnets

Cut out the pieces

Glue the stand to the base with plastic glue, so they are perpendicular

glue the HKM's to the assembled bracket

drill a hole in your tank where ever you want to put them, put a magnet in the tank and in the bottom of the bracket with super glue.

Here's a couple Rhino's and a Razor back with a Twin link Plasma gun.

For the twin link Plasma gun I used Plasma guns that came with the space wolves sprues. I cut off the grips, drilled small holes to match the mount, then put a small piece of plastic card between the two to make them match up.

Normally I like to create my own chapters and background for my 40k army's, but with the wolves I thought this would be the first one I would go by the book. So in starting them out I went with the classic look of Ragnars pack. After playing the army for a while I've decided it would be more in tune to my army to go with Harold Deathwolfs pack, as I'm a fan of the Thunderwolf cavalry! Also I feel like my finished paint jobs were coming off a little bright (too much yellow!). Below is a comparison of the new pack marking and color scheme. (I have a lot of repainting to do now!)

Sons of Fenris -Review

I'm not reviewing the entire omnibus, but rather the second book in the ominibus. Let me just say that the first Omnibus by Willam King and all of the Gotrek and Felix novels are excellent.

What I would like to do is bring paticular attention to the 5th book of the Space Wolf series by Lee Lightner (a Penn name for 2 authors in Baltimore). I love William King so much I was apprehensive about this book, thinking that there was no way it could be as good as William Kings' other novels. I was wrong! I'm going to keep this short and spoiler free, but let me just say that the book is FULL of fan service and awesome space wolf moments. For me, this is the "Empire strikes back" of space wolf books. Though it is but a piece of the complete Space Wolf series, this one book was truly epic. It truly inspires me to paint and play space wolves. Now if Games Workshop would only come out with a Ragnar miniature that is as good as Adrian Smith's cover paintings, we would be in business.

So do not let the thought of another author(s) writing space wolves keep you from reading this one. It is well worth it!

One down, lots to go! This photo is cracking me up. The thunderwolf looks like it has a giant grin on his face. Overall, I'm pretty pleased with how the "heroclix" thunderwolf came out. I decided to give these guys lava bases to give me something to do on those big 60mm bases. The wolf itself was painted with the same scheme as my fenrisian wolves.

Here's my first stab at a new tyranid color scheme (that isn't blue and purple). Need to paint an actual Tyranid so I can get the full scheme with a black& red highlighted carapace.

How to paint Wolves

Below is my method for painting Fenrisian wolves. For lack of a proper (and affordable) Fenrisian wolf model, I decided to go with the chaos warhounds. I did not glue in the antlers and green-stuffed over the holes. Though these may not be the most optimum models to use, I think the method below could be used for any wolf model. I'll be using this color scheme on my Thunder wolves as well.

I used the pic below as referance.

Paint the under belly/arms/head with Denab Stone.

Paint the rest of the fur Scorched Brown

Wash the Denab Stone with Gryphone sepia.

Drybrush the Scorched Brown with Snakebite leather.

Drybrush the light areas with bleached bone. lightly overbrushing onto the dark fur. paint the teeth bleached one, paint the gums, tongue pink.

This next picture isn't that good (overcast outside), carefully paint the lips & nose black. Paint around the eyes and over the top crest of the fur black. paint the hoves black.

Finally lightly highlight the black with adeptus battlegrey. I painted the eyes yellow with a dark angels green pupil.

I made this list out of shear love for terminators, and to have fun with the new models. For the most part, I was pretty pleased with how it worked out for the first couple games (both were a draw). I'll be tweaking it a bit focusing on what worked and what did not. Njal & Arjac were a little over the top points wise, but fun as hell.

Anyway it was a lot of fun putting all of these models on the field at once! I kept everything in reserve and deep stiked the land speeders. Between the land speeders and lone wolfs, I devastated the enemy's armor, It was awesome. Though the lone wolfs survived which helped my opponent get a draw on the annihilation mission.

Hands down, Terminators! Ever since 1st edition of Space Hulk came out, I have been in love with the marines in Tactical Dreadnought armor. The very thought of these walking tanks in deep space gunning down aliens really appealed to me. And it just so happened that I was concurrently obsessed with everything to do with "Alien" (the first two movies, toys, comics, you name it) at the time. Needless to say, I like to include terminators in my army lists, even though they do not always perform as well as I would like. Below is a gallery of some of my models from the newest to the very early ones.

Space Wolf: Lone Wolf. I converted his wolf claw into a chainfist. using a chainsword with the teeth cut off on one side.

Chaos Space Marine: Sorcerer of Chaos (HQ). Pink Terminator!!!! I think it is paticularly demeaning to my loyalist buddy when he faces these candy coated termies.

Though not technically terminators, more like terminators x10. Which is how much I love them....

Simple Mark of the Wulfen conversion

I wanted to convey the part about using "claws and teeth in close combat" specifically claws. I found a perfect claw from the old space hulk, plastic genestealers models. With the expansions, I have a ton of these old genestealers still on the sprue. Converting the model was a simple mater of cutting the Space Wolf hand off, and replacing with the genestealer hand. the genestealer hand just needed to be trimmed up a bit around the wrist. I love the pose of the outstretched fingers ready to "render" some flesh.

Time to sound off with a: "I got my space wolves stuff!!!!!". Yep, that's right. Been looking forward to this. I'm currently soaking in the Codex and all it's glory. It is wondrous. I don't have a whole lot of stuff, but I did manage to scrape up enough cash for a wolf pack box. I picked up a rune priest the other day and started painting it. (pics coming soon, my camera broke), trying to formulate my color palette, and thinking about the plan for my army. I'll of course be assimilating some black reach marines and dreadnaught into the house of Russ. And slowly but surely building up a suitable force for Battle!

Here is some more pics of my Craftworld: Mal-Akhi Eldar. For my color scheme I tried to go with earth tones, like a wood elves in space kind of thing. Some of the common themes are, No steel/metal what so ever, all of their stuff is wraithbone. I also used a marble type finish on some of the tech (ships, weapons, jump packs, parts of the Avatar). Yellowish Orange is used to represent Fire / Power / Status, their alien version of Leather comes in red.

Prior to reading this book I never had much interest in Space Wolves. Not for lack of respect or a dislike of them mind you. For the most part because one of my best friends has a Space Wolves army. So in my circle of friends / gamers, that Army is "taken". The other reason being, I normally prefer to create my own 40k fluff & designs for my armies. But then I read the greatness of William Kings books (Whom I always loved for the Gotrek novels). The completion of the Omnibus coincided with the timing of all the new Space wolves rumors. From that point on I was hooked. Modeling and painting the Sons of Russ is on the top of my list now. Which brings me to the topic of this note. Where's Ragnar? I was very surprised that a new model isn't coming out for Ragnar. The old model is very dated looking. I really want to model Ragnar and other main characters from his pack in the books. I hope they come out with a new model for the second wave of mini's , but in the meantime, I think my first project will be to model one after the painting above.

Dipping Orks / Quick table top quality Horde force

So for my Orks, I'm not going to spend 8 hours apiece on the troops. Especialy when the units are 20-30 strong. I want to get them painted quickly, but have them look nice on the table top. I've been using some products form Army Painter, that I think really turn out well, and save a TON of time. In just a few steps you will have a completed unit. So on to it.....

I do this "assemply line" style, painting a whole unit at a time.

Once assembled I glue citidel modeling sand on the base, then spray the models with Army painter Greenskin Primer. The beauty of the colored primer, is killing the primer and skin base color with one stone. (giant time saver).

A thing to note: I'm note going to be doing a lot of highlights with these models, so for the most part use bright colors so once the army painter dip is applied they will not be too dark.
Before I get to the rest of the base colors I run a very quick drybrush of goblin green to all of the skin areas.

For all of the base colors, I thin the paints down quite a bit so the paint goes on thin and quickly!
First thing I base coat is the base. I use adeptus battlegray for a blasted wasteland look in the final product.
Ultramaines blue for the pants. Skull white for the shirt (My color scheme is blue jeans and wife beater), Boltgun Metal for all the metal parts, Chaos Black for all the straps/boots/leather (matches the Warbikers black leather jackets)
Finally hit the teeth and claws with Bleached Bone, and stiching with tausept ochre.
If these were regular troops, the basecoat would be done, but since for this example I'm painting my converted tank busta's, I hit the fins of the rokkits with mecharite red.

That didn't take long at all. The unit is now ready for the Army painter quick shade medium dip.

Be sure to follow the directions on Army painters web site, You need to really shake the excess off otherwhise excess will pool on elbows, bottoms of gun/ axe handles etc.
Now you wait! once dipped they need to dry about 24 hours or more
While I'm waiting for one unit to dry I'll start basecoating another unit. or work on another project all together.

Once dry you just need to hit the eyes with Blood red if desired, and paint the bottom of the base with Graveyard earth. Add burnt grass to the base and spray with matt spray.
